Pre-Covid-pandemic days one would grab the car keys, cell phone and wallet while heading out the door. These days the majority look for masks as they prepare to step out. Masks have become an integral part of our dress code and many wonder what an average lifespan of a mask could be. Many questions linger, like: ‘Am I using the same mask for too long a time?’ ‘Am I wasting N-95 masks that are still hard to get?’
Effective use of the same mask depends on where it is used and how long it is used, measured in hours and days. All masks can be used a few times and need not be discarded after single use. A single run to the grocery store allows the mask to be kept and used several times. However, at the gym, after an intense work out with sweat drenching the elastic holdings of the mask and making it loose and wet, the surgical mask should be discarded.
The US Centers of Disease Control and Prevention has certain recommendations for health workers. Firstly, as frontline workers are constantly dealing with sick people, many of whom may be Covid positive, they are strongly encouraged to wear N-95 masks. These form a shield over nose and mouth, fit snugly and provide good protection from all kinds of droplet infections. These can block very small particles in the air that may be transmitted by coughs, sneezes, during certain medical procedures, and even talking and laughter. Secondly, the amount of time the N-95 is worn is more important than how frequently it is worn. Considering number of times, CDC recommends that health care workers may wear the mask up to five times.
With every breath taken in an N-95 masks, particles do accumulate in it. The longer the mask is used the more particles will be trapped in it, and with time it may be difficult to breathe through it. Also, one must pay attention to the elastic band. If it gets worn out and the mask does not fit snugly on the face, then it is time to dispose of the mask.
Although all fabric masks are washable and can be reused, it must be noted that N-95 masks cannot be washed. Attempts at washing and reusing them are only going to lead to ineffective use of masks, resulting in risk of infection.
The good news is that President Biden recently announced the provision of free N-95 masks and Covid Home Testing Kits. Action is being taken on this fast, and while many registered people are already receiving Covid home testing kits in the mail, access to free N-95 masks will also start soon.
The US government plans to give out free N-95 masks at pharmacies and grocery stores, so that people have easy access to them and can stay protected from Covid infection. Be on the lookout for free masks when out shopping, before long!
Good information!
Following the guidelines can make a big difference.
Thank you for posting useful guidelines- discarding masks too soon are a waste of resource and prolonged use of the same mask poses health problems – hopefully everyone will be diligent in doing the right thing.
Indeed. Wearing the right mask the right way for the recommended time, can certainly make a big difference.
